Memories from the 70s and 80s

My memories of the 70’s and 80’s are a busy and exciting period in my life, fulfilling portrait commissions of many of the world’s leading sporting personalities. Meeting them, understanding their requirements and then interpreting these into the finished painting. During this time, I gained an international reputation as a sports artist and many limited edition prints were created from the paintings of stars, such as George Best, Chris Evert, Ian Botham, Nick Faldo, Mick Mills, John McEnroe, David Gower, Ray Clemence and many more but the largest commission was a six feet by four feet canvas of Liverpool FC, commissioned by Hitachi in 1980, which still hangs at Anfield. Some of these paintings can be seen on this ‘Memories’ page. One more piece of memorabilia is the picture of Chris Evert’s Converse tennis shoes, which she wore when winning the Wimbledon Ladies title in 1981. As an additional ‘thank you’, she gave me the shoes because she was so pleased with the painting.
